Does Your Sun Sign Even Matter?

Probably a yes and no answer here...

The sun sign is probably the most 'well known' element of the natal or birth chart, but is it for good reason? Let's have a chat...

Astrology is an ancient system that uses the position of celestial bodies, zodiac signs and houses at the time of your birth as a personal 'map'. Your natal chart maps out the positions of the sun, moon, stars and planets from the exact moment and place of your birth. As part of this, there are 12 signs of the zodiac each representing 30 degrees of celestial longitude. They include a number of components and characteristics including their ruling planet, element (earth, air, fire, water), and qualities (mutable, fixed and cardinal). This makes up their essence. For example, pisces is a mutable, water sign that is ruled by Neptune and Jupiter.

Why is the sun sign important?

Chances are, you know your sun sign, but why is it so widely spoken about?

Your sun sign can be thought of as our truest self. It is your fundamental essence and what you project out into the world. It is your core personality, sense of self and preferences. It is influenced by the position of the sun so it is a central factor in your natal chart.

Is this ALL that is important then?

With each sun sign comes stereotypes or typical traits that you may encounter e.g. pisces are mystical and emotional. This may be true to some extent but is part of a larger picture that is interconnected and complex.

So what else should we focus on?

Astrology is such a detailed and fascinating science and it can be overwhelming to try and learn it all at once (I am not an astrologer myself but love to keep learning as I go!). The key areas to know are your sun, moon and rising signs.

Moon

The position of the moon at your birth gives you your moon sign. Your moon sign links to your soul and emotions. It is useful in understanding your inner world, how to rest and recharge and how you might react in emotive situations.

Rising

Your rising sign or ascendant is derived from the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon when you were born. It relates to who you are socially and how you present to others. It represents your physical body and outward presentation.

Interested in learning more?

I would suggest checking out your natal chart and looking at what zodiac signs your sun, moon and ascendant fall in. You can then begin to research the qualities of each sign to begin to build a picture of your astrological makeup.

If you want to hold onto the essence of your sun sign as you explore, then perhaps consider one of our zodiac notebooks? These are lined notebooks inspired by each sign to bring a little magic into your note taking...
